Valor Memorial Park, Davidson Co. NC
The FIRST project of its kind. The Robert E Lee Chapter, UDC #324 led by Debra Barta, past president, took possession of their Confederate Monument that was a memorial to dead Confederate Soldiers from Davidson County and placed it safely into storage.
In 2020 when protest were all over the United States the City of Lexington, NC sued the UDC chapter and the county to remove the memorial from city limits. The UDC chapter not happy with the future plans for their monument, and not willing to lose it to years of storage, watch it be placed in the museum, or plaques placed around it not remembering the sacrifices of The Davidson County boys that fought in the Confederacy for N.C. made a daring decision. The chapter decided to place the memorial on private property in Davidson County. Valor Memorial Park became official in December 2020. The work began! It took several months to track down a piece of property. James and Hilda Goins insisted on donating the property, when they were asked if they’d consider selling property for a park, to save the monument and restore its honor.
Work began, led by chapter member, Toni London, to raise the money and clear the property to prepare for the rededication. The ladies decided on September 18, 2021. That was also close to the anniversary of the chapter. After working all summer volunteering with other Davidson County residents, the monument was put back up on September 10, 2021. The people that worked that summer (in the heat) to make Valor Memorial Park a reality are Gilbert Futrell, Debra Barta, James Goins, Toni London, Joe London, Brian Simmons, Terri Moore, Steve Martin, Jamie Lee, Kevin Berrier, and Bobby Stroupe. Several businesses had dinners to raise money, Concrete was donated, flag poles were donated, people donated machinery, and some took care of the cost of required permits. So many people worked together to make things happen. There are plaques on the bottom of the benches as a thank you to them.
The Robert E Lee, UDC #323 has now placed their memorial permanently Valor Memorial Park. The park is maintained by county citizens, Commemorating Honor, Inc., Volunteers from Davidson County, NC., and other surrounding counties and even states. The park is privately owned by the Nonprofit, Commemorating Honor, Inc. We are a 501(c)3 Nonprofit. We operate on donations, and we are all volunteers.
At Valor Memorial Park our mission is historic preservation, and honoring all Veterans, Confederate Soldiers and US Soldiers. We strive to make the park educational. And honor all the men and women who took the oath to defend and protect the South and United States by serving in the military. We hope to inspire the younger generation to serve and show honor to all who have served since our nation’s founding and know and respect History.

In the Summer of 2024, we added information boards at all of the monuments at Valor Memorial Park. These information boards were made possible by The Society of the Order of the Southern Cross.
